Charli's Story

Charli was a completely happy, healthy little girl the week before she fell ill. On Friday morning, she became sick, and she was rushed to Kingaroy hospital where they diagnosed her with a collapsed lung. A needle was put in the side of her chest to release excess air before she was flown to Sunshine Coast University Hospital late that afternoon. 

Charli’s condition began to deteriorate overnight, before doctors advised Charli had sepsis. The retrieval team from Queensland Children’s Hospital then called to take Charli via chopper to Brisbane so she could be immediately placed on ECMO.

ECMO is a life-support technique that takes over the function of the heart and lungs while the body is fighting an illness or injury.

Thanks to your donations, we have been able to support the ECMO Service at the Queensland Children’s Hospital, through the purchase of pumps and monitors.  

Charli is getting back to full health, however, she had to go through a lot of allied support, including OT, physio, speech therapy, ENT, and nutrition. It has been a slow journey with Charli relearning how to walk, talk, and eat again, and we are very grateful to the Foundation for the support we received from the Patient and Family Support team based at Queensland Children’s Hospital.  

Your support helps fund the Patient and Family support team, including two family liaison staff to be there for families when they need help the most.
