By Christel Ryley

We're fundraising for the Children's Hospital Foundation

We've created this page because we want to make a difference.  We've chosen to support the Children's hospital foundation because our family has recently been significantly impacted by the foundations generosity and support as well as experienced first hand the absolutely amazing work of the Queensland Children's Hospital.  We're inspired by the work that the Children’s Hospital Foundation do, so we wanted to raise money for them.

Please help us help them by giving whatever you can using the 'donate' button. The more people that know about the Children’s Hospital Foundation, the greater their impact, so please also spread the word by sharing our page with your friends and family.

Thank you in advance for your generosity, it means a lot!

Ethan's Story

Saturday 4th Dec
On October 3 2021, Ethan was doing what every 8 year old kid loves to do, playing on swings and being a Ninja.  We were at a friends house for all of 5 minutes when we heard screaming and our daughter came running to alert us that Ethan had broken his arm.  He sustained a compound fracture to the left ulna and dislocated radial head with significant contamination in the bone.  Ethan had wash out and debridement surgeries at both the Toowoomba Hospital and St Vincent's Hospital within days of each other followed by IV and oral antibiotics.

We were almost at the 6 week checkup point when I noticed his wound was starting to look unusual and red.  Within days it had flared and before we knew it Ethan were back at St Vincent's Hospital having another wash out and debridement.  At this point our surgeon referred us to Dr Liam Johnson at Queensland Children's Hospital who along with his Orthopaedic team and the Infectious Diseases team took over Ethan's case.

Under Dr Johnson, Ethan had a further two surgeries (that's now five in the space of two months) and required a central PICC line due to complications with multiple cannulas.  He was on extremely high doses of intravenous antibiotics which then took a heavy impact on his gut health and mood.

After two weeks of treatment at QCH, Ethan was discharged and continues to take high doses of oral antibiotics to ensure any infection is completely gone.

Ethan's stay at QCH however was an experience like no other.  The hospital is truely built to support sick kids and their families.  With the help of the Children's Hospital Foundation, Ethan was able to be distracted from the awful parts of being sick in hospital with regular visits from volunteers, the Kidzone on level 6, books, his Nintendo Switch plus Minecraft that he was able to borrow and so much more!  Not to mention the MatchBox car and Quilt that were very kindly given to him!

Our story will continue in January when we return to QCH for rebuilding and bone grafting to repair the bone lost from Osteomyelitis. But for now, we are so grateful for the Children's Hospital Foundation.
