Musgrave Hill State School - Meet Slater

Meet Slater! Slater was a courageous 6 year old boy and an absolute ray of sunshine. Like any other child, Slater loved YouTube, playing video games, singing and dancing to his favourite songs and seeing his friends at school. However, unlike most other 6 year olds, Slater spent the majority of his life in hospital, fighting a battle no-one should ever endure.

At 17 months of age, Slater was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer known as Posterior Fossa Ependymoma (Cerebellum and Brain Stem). These tumours account for about 6% of childhood brain tumours. Since then, Slater's mum Bianca, her family and their incredible team of medical professionals, worked tirelessly to raise awareness for this terrible disease. Slater was the face of brain cancer at the Brisbane Children's Hospital and his family have worked closely with the foundation over the years. Unfortunately, due to the severity and location of Slater's tumour, he passed away in 2021.

In 2021, Slater started Prep at Musgrave Hill State School. Whilst at Musgrave, he made so many friends and made a lasting impact on each and everyone one of us. He really was an absolute superstar.

In August, we are holding our annual Hero Parade to celebrate Slater’s memory. This will involve our entire school walking two laps of the oval together in Slater’s memory and bringing along a gold coin donation or making an online donation towards brain cancer research.

Slater’s family have advocated tirelessly to raise money for childhood brain cancer research. Over the last three years our school community has raised over $22000 for the cause in Slater’s name.

This is an annual event to honour Slater’s legacy until 2027 when his cohort graduate from Musgrave.
