Why I'm fundraising for the Children's Hospital Foundation
Thursday 27th MarI can't wait to get back in the saddle for this year’s Bike4Burns charity ride — raising money for burns research, medical equipment, and support services for children undergoing treatment for burn injuries.
This cause is incredibly close to my heart. On the 20th of September 2012, at 23 years old, I was riding my motorcycle to work when I was rear-ended at a red light. The impact pushed me into the van in front, rupturing my fuel tank, which ignited. I was pinned between the two vehicles and my bike.
I sustained a minor brain injury, a burst fracture of my L3 and L4 vertebrae, a broken sternum, and full-thickness burns to 40% of my body.
Although that was nearly 13 years ago, in many ways, it still feels like yesterday. At the time of my accident, there had been some amazing advancements in burns care — and I was lucky enough to benefit from them. My recovery was significantly shorter than first expected, thanks not only to medical innovation but also to the support services provided to me and my family.
For children, it’s even harder. Skin grafts don’t grow or stretch like normal skin, which means repeat surgeries and ongoing treatment as they grow. Recovery is long, painful, and life-changing — anything we can do to make it even a little bit easier is worth it.
I'm proud to take on this year's new challenge of a mostly gravel ride and raise funds for children with burns.
